Here’s how a video raised money for refugees.
This Halloween, I had the honour of spending it with friends as we greeted a refugee (previously detained at Australia’s Manus Detention Centre) as he arrived in Canada. I produced a short heartfelt video of his arrival at Toronto Pearson International Airport. This video has been widely shared on social media and also used in this news story:
Organizers at Ads-Up (the NGO which made Amir’s arrival to Canada possible and licensed use of my footage) tell me that my video has made an enormous difference in their fundraising and media outreach efforts. According to them, the video has helped them raise about $100,000 since Halloween!
I’m so grateful this video raised money for refugees. I know what it’s like to leave family and friends behind to flee to another country for safety. My privilege meant my journey was frictionless and didn’t require becoming a refugee. Others like Amir aren’t this lucky. The refugee crisis is a cause near and dear to me and this is just a small slice of some of the work I’m doing in this field.
I hope to have more to share down the road!
